Change of Practice Patterns Following an Educational Comment on Reports of Benign-Appearing Endometrial Cells in Papanicolaou Tests
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This article discusses the impact of including an educational comment in Papanicolaou (Pap) test reports with benign-appearing endometrial cells (nEMCs) for women aged 45 and older. The study aimed to evaluate changes in clinical practice patterns after including this comment. Results showed a decrease in follow-up biopsies triggered by nEMCs, with only a small percentage of patients undergoing biopsy having abnormal findings. Most asymptomatic premenopausal women with nEMCs had benign outcomes without needing biopsies. The study suggests that adding clinical modifiers like bleeding history and ultrasound findings in determining optimal management for women with nEMCs is important. This approach significantly reduced unnecessary endometrial procedures and associated costs. The study emphasizes the importance of considering other clinical factors before recommending further investigations for women with nEMCs in their Pap tests. Overall, the inclusion of the educational comment helped in reducing unnecessary biopsies while ensuring appropriate management based on individual patient characteristics.
