• formulate a working differential diagnosis in a case of acute peritonitis;

• identify key imaging findings in a case of peritoneal mesothelioma;

• describe the gross pathologic findings in a patient with peritoneal mesothelioma;

• describe the histologic features of peritoneal mesothelioma;

• order appropriate immunohistochemical stains to differentiate among primary and secondary peritoneal malignancies; and

• identify the inflammatory stimuli involved in tumorigenesis and particularly in the development of malignant mesothelioma.
