DDWS2-25 - CME/CMLE - Deep-Dive Workshop on Augmented and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Turning Laboratory Data into Insights: Introduction to the R Programming Language
Course Description
Laboratories generate a significant volume of the objective, structured data used to diagnose and treat patients. This data can be used to generate insights about the health of populations of patients, care gaps within healthcare systems, how our laboratories are performing, and how laboratories and healthcare systems can be improved. Data analysis is a powerful skill but is not routinely taught in laboratory medicine and pathology training programs. Learning the syntax and functions of a programming language to perform data analysis previously required a significant time investment but the emergence of large language models (e.g. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot) can help accelerate the adoption of these skills. The course will provide attendees with principles of effectively working with data while introducing the R programming language and the RStudio integrated development environment for performing laboratory data analysis. We will establish fundamental skills in the analysis of laboratory data, including visualization using the ggplot2 package as well as data transformation and summarization using dplyr tools. Learners will obtain practical experience by performing data analysis on a laboratory data set and gain a foundation for further data science skills. Finally, more advanced functionality in R will be outlined as well as guidance on how large language models can assist in developing new skills so that attendees will be prepared to develop their skills independently.
