DEIBXXEM2405 - CME/CMLE - Applying Cultural Competency in the Laboratory
Course Description

This session at the 2023 Annual Meeting is presented by Jose C. Jara-Aguirre, MD, FASCP, from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Jara-Aguirre highlights the importance of cultural competency in the context of globalization and laboratory personnel shortages. The components of cultural competency are broken down and models for assessing cultural competency are introduced. This is followed by the discussion of scenarios along with a lens on implicit biases and microaggressions in the real world. 

Topics covered include: 

  • Definition of key terms 
  • Descriptions of a person’s behavior at various stages of cultural competency 
  • Case studies and scenarios related to challenges and resolutions

The activity offers 0.75 CME/CMLE credit.
