This 2021 Annual Meeting session is presented by Brian D. Adkins, MD from UT Southwestern Medical Center. With the number of young people identifying as transgender increasing, the transfusion medicine community must adapt in order to provide informed and compassionate care for this population. Simultaneously, the blood donor pool is aging, and research has shown younger individuals make more robust hematopoietic stem cell donors. As such it is important to remove stigma associated with blood donation and expand hematopoietic stem cell donation amongst LGBTQ+ individuals. Numerous hurdles exist in the form of regulations as well as documentation and informatics issues. To move forward, practitioners should be familiar with current regulations in place as well as gaps that exist which exclude this population from allogeneic donation.
Topics covered include:
- Definitions and demographics
- Donor considerations
- Transfusion service considerations
- Cellular therapy considerations
The activity offers 0.75 CME/CMLE credit.
To complete the activity and receive credit, the participant must view the recording. CME certificates will be provided online.
