Course Description

This session from the 2023 Annual Meeting is presented by La’Tonzia Adams, MD, MS, FASCP from VA Portland Health Care System. Dr. Adams highlights the achievements of key Black pathologists in American history, such as Dr. William Augustus Hinton, Dr. Jane Hinton, Dr. Ruth Marguerite Easterling, Dr. Julian Herman Lewis, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, and Dr. Charles Richard Drew. She then highlights the achievements of notable Black laboratory scientists in history and into the present, such as Harold Amos, Dr. Lizzie J. Harrell, Vivien T. Thomas, L.L.D., Dana Powell Baker, MBA, MS, MLS, (ASCP)CM, Tiffany Channer, MPH, MLS(ASCP) CM, Tywauna Wilson, MBA, MLS (ASCP)CM, and Dr. Vivian Pinn.

Topics covered include: 

  • Demographics or active physicians  
  • A brief history of pathology 
  • Highlights from the careers of 7 inspirational Black physicians from the past 
  • Demographics or active medical laboratory scientists 
  • Historical beginnings informed by contextual events 
  • Highlights from the careers of 7 inspirational Black medical laboratory scientists, both past and current 

The activity offers 0.75 CME/CMLE credit. 

To complete the activity and receive credit, the participant must view the recording. CME certificates will be provided online.

This is NOT addressed in this talk.
