This 2021 Annual Meeting session is presented by Darryl Elzie, PsyD, MHA, MT(ASCP), CQA(ASQ) from Sentara Healthcare. Data shows that diverse teams are >80% better at making decisions and that inclusive companies are doubly innovative. While many organizations strive to promote recruitment and retention of a diverse workplace, lack of best-practice guidelines and variability in recruitment procedures create hinderances in the diversification of our laboratories. As pathologists and laboratory professionals, what are the best practices for recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce? Our panelists will explore the challenges and opportunities of hiring with a focus on diversity and inclusion. They will describe tips and tricks to improve the hiring and retaining employees across a broad range of age, cultural background, physical abilities and disabilities, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
Topics covered include:
- Reaching a diverse pool of applications
- Holistic reviews of applicants
- Prior challenges in recruitment of a diverse pathology workforce
- Increasing bias awareness when reviewing applications
- Laws pertaining to recruiting a diverse workforce
