DEIBXXEM2415 - CME/CMLE - Leading Up to a Career in Forensic Pathology: My Road to Success as a Black Female in Medicine
Course Description

This 2021 Annual Meeting session is presented by Nicole R. Jackson, MD, MPH from the University of Washington. Dr. Jackson will share her journey from a first-generation college graduate to a practicing forensic pathologist and medical examiner. From the intersection of gender and race, Dr. Jackson will share the social and institutional challenges faced during her training as one of three Black students in her medical school class, as one of the first Black females in her general surgery residency program, and as the first Black female graduate of her pathology residency program. She will share what attracted her to pathology and motivated her to switch careers and why she feels this needs to be better leveraged in recruitment efforts, as well as mental health and wellbeing challenges faced in her busy workplace from seeing, first-hand, the fatal outcomes of health disparities and inequities in America daily. Participants will learn obstacles faced common to underrepresented minority trainees and resources utilized to reach their goals, including mentoring and sponsorship.

  • The divided and unequal US educational system
