DMT106-24 - CME/CMLE - Accurate Results in Clinical Laboratories: Addressing Pre-analytical, Analytical, and Post Analytical Errors
Course Description
Accurate laboratory results are essential for patient management and patient safety. In this education session various sources of errors in clinical laboratory tests will be discussed with approaches to correct and prevent errors when possible. Steps such as proper patient identification, using proper specimen collection techniques, transportation and storage should be taken to eliminate pre-analytical errors. Analytical errors can be more difficult to identify as the lab often only becomes aware when clinicians indicate that lab results do not match the clinical picture. In these cases, specimen and assay troubleshooting must be performed. Post analytical errors still occur in scenarios involving result transcription or manual result entry. Oftentimes, technologists are not trained in troubleshooting techniques and years of experience may be required to develop expertise. In this education session, two clinical chemists with a combined 50 years of clinical experience will present issues encountered in each phase of laboratory testing.
