Employee injuries and exposures continue to exist within the lab. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the OSHA recordable events throughout the year, adding evidence to this claim. As a Lab Safety Support Coordinator and an external inspector, I regularly see safety issues with PPE usage, waste management, and chemical hygiene. Some lab managers may lack the knowledge of how to address issues with the safety culture in their labs. Laboratory management may not be tracking the correct safety indicators or may not be able to interpret laboratory safety audits and inspections in a manner that results in positive change. In addition, adding a weighted value to a adherence to laboratory safety can be an asset in reducing accidents. Being able to evaluate the safety culture and knowing not just when, but how to adjust, can lead to a reduction in incidents and a much safer work environment.
