DMT114-24 - CME/CMLE - Navigating the Diagnostic Challenges in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Pitfalls and Mimics
Course Description
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses two primary disorders: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Diagnosing IBD presents challenges with significant clinical implications. It's important to note that the presence of chronic active colitis features in colonic biopsy does not always signify IBD, and conversely, IBD cases may not consistently exhibit classic features of chronic active colitis on biopsy. Pathologists unfamiliar with these conditions may erroneously diagnose non-IBD patients with IBD, resulting in
diagnostic confusion and inappropriate clinical management. To address this, a case-based format will be utilized in this education session, covering both classic and non-classic IBD cases, along with various colitides mimicking IBD. This format will include discussions on morphology, differential diagnoses, updates, appropriate ancillary tests, and clinical significance. Interactive elements such as Q&A sessions and audience polls will enhance participant understanding and retention of knowledge.
