DMT114-25 - CME/CMLE - Embracing Our Imperfections: Diagnostic Errors in Gastrointestinal Pathology
Course Description
Misses and misinterpretations are bound to happen given the complex and integral role pathologists play in patient care. Several fundamental barriers including pathologist’s fear, work culture and such errors often considered as a sign of incompetency, precludes their open discussion. Although, recognition of interpretive diagnostic error is a critical component of surgical pathology education, little is discussed and taught during pathology training as to how to deal with them in an actual scenario. While we strive to continue individual learning about the many diagnostic potential pitfalls, unfortunately, interpretive errors are usually taken extremely personal. It is time to change our perspective of “individual responsibility only” and provide a supportive, caring and safe environment in which learning and change may flourish. In such a space, errors will be reduced, and optimal patient care may be given.

This short course will focus on real life gastrointestinal (GI) interpretation errors discussed in case-based scenarios. One of our focus points will be on methods to create a culture of safety in which such situations are most effectively analyzed and addressed. The strength and a unique aspect of this course is that we will share our own experiences with examples of true interpretation errors occurring in GI subspecialty, discuss potential pitfalls and future course of action. Through this platform, we will highlight the importance of such discussions and effective communications as we all need to continue to strive to reduce them.
