Endometrial biopsies are a fundamental part of the work-up for abnormal and postmenopausal uterine bleeding. They represent a very common specimen in daily practice, both in general and subspecialty settings. However, these biopsies are known for their level of diagnostic difficulty resulting, in part, from the fragmented nature of these specimens, but mostly related to the wide variety of physiological and pathological changes that may be encountered. In this education session, non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions will be discussed, along with their differential diagnoses and diagnostic pitfalls, in illustrative case-based scenarios. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to recognize the most important diagnostic entities, will be able to understand the utility of immunohistochemical stains in the work-up of these lesions, identify and assess the effects of hormonal therapy on benign and neoplastic endometrium, and will be able to recognize and avoid potential diagnostic pitfalls.
