DMT122-24 - CME/CMLE - International Society of Gynecological Pathologists (ISGyP) Companion Society Session: Squamous Precursor Lesions of the Vulva: Pitfalls and Challenges in Diagnosing HPV-associated and HPV-Independent Vulvar Neoplasia
Course Description
This education session will review vulvar squamous precursor lesions including HPV-associated vulvar intraepithelial lesions, p53-aberrant HPV-independent vulvar intraepithelial lesions, and p53-wild-type vulvar intraepithelial lesions. The faculty will discuss the biologic basis and morphologic characteristics of these lesions and other non-neoplastic conditions that enter into the differential diagnosis, as well as the risk of progression to vulvar squamous cell carcinoma. In particular, this education session will address the value and limitations of biomarkers in this setting including p16, p53, and HPV mRNA in situ hybridization, among others. The faculty will present cases in an interactive manner that highlight challenges and pitfalls in diagnosing vulvar squamous precursor lesions and their differential diagnoses. The faculty will make use of polling questions to engage the audience and test their knowledge.
