DMT123-25 - CME/CMLE - Molecular Send-Out Tests: What Residents Need to Know
Course Description
As molecular diagnostics become increasingly integral to patient care, pathology residents must be well-versed in the processes, challenges, and decision-making involved in molecular send-outs. This session will provide a practical, case-based overview of the key concepts residents need to understand, including when and why to order molecular tests, specimen requirements and handling, insurance and billing considerations, and the critical role of communication between pathologists, clinicians, and laboratory staff. Attendees will leave with actionable knowledge to enhance their confidence and competence in managing molecular send-outs both in academic and community practice settings.

Learning Objectives.

1. Identify common indications for molecular send-outs across major subspecialties.

2. Understand logistical, financial, and ethical considerations in selecting and coordinating send-outs.

3. Develop strategies for effective communication with clinicians and reference laboratories.

4. Recognize the evolving landscape of molecular testing and anticipate future trends.
