With the exploding technological advances in ancillary studies in pathology, there is excitement for the new era in precision diagnostics; however, morphological appraisal remains a fundamental skill needed to practice hematopathology. Skilled morphologic interpretation of blood smears, bone marrows, and lymph nodes is still the basis for classification in the 5th edition World Health Organization and International Consensus Classification systems, despite the usual educational focus on sophisticated ancillary studies in training programs and continuing medical education activities. The interpretation of ancillary studies is skilled as well, with interpreters requiring knowledge of limitations and pitfalls of molecular and flow cytometric studies. In this education session, the faculty will discuss challenging patient cases that require strong morphologic assessment to aid in the diagnosis and appropriate utilization of relevant ancillary studies. The education session will focus on morphologic differential diagnosis and utilization and pitfalls of ancillary studies in hematopathology.
