The advances in our understanding of medical liver diseases and hepatology in past few decades have significantly impacted the practice of medical liver pathology. The emergence of more sophisticated technology for early and accurate disease detection like fibro scans, serological monitoring for fibrosis and evolution of highly effective treatments for hepatitides etc., have decreased the need for liver biopsies in many settings. At the same time increasing use of dietary supplements, emergence of new medications and the obesity epidemic have led to changing trends in the indications for medical liver biopsies. Currently, liver biopsies are increasingly performed when the etiology of the liver disease remains unclear or, several equally likely possibilities exist or response to a therapy needs to be evaluated. Hence, the interpretation of medical liver biopsies requires a good understanding of the clinical needs, awareness of the involved complexities and evolving technology to provide a comprehensive pathology report. This education session is designed to reinforce general knowledge in hepatobiliary pathology and will address the professional practice gaps by focusing on the importance of clinicopathological correlation, ancillary serum and tissue analytical techniques that enhance histopathological evaluation and their usage.
