DMT136-24 - CME/CMLE - Infections Without Borders - Can They Occur So Late?
Course Description
Infectious agents do not need passports to cross geopolitical boundaries. While visiting another country, persons can become infected through a variety of routes and unknowingly bring a microorganism home. While it seems obvious that international visitors may buy an infectious object or pet from another country, it's less obvious when someone hasn't traveled internationally but has been in contact with a pet or infectious object from another country. Some of these infections may not present immediately making the diagnosis even more difficult because the infection is not frequently seen in the location where the patient is being treated and because the connection with the originating country may be distant. In the education session, faculty will focus on those infections that can take months or years to become symptomatic. The education session is organized around case presentations with questions to the audience integrated or following the case. The faculty will focus on diagnostic methods and present at least one example of a virus, bacterium, fungus, and parasite.
