DMT137-25 - CME/CMLE - BASICS: Blood Product Shortage Simulation and Preparedness Exercise
Course Description
The BASICS study explores Chicagoland transfusion service readiness during blood product shortages and presents a model for crisis management grounded in collaboration, ethical allocation, and patient safety. Building on data from Northwestern Medicine’s regional survey and tabletop simulation exercises, this session will share key findings on institutional confidence, preparedness gaps, and opportunities for partnership across hospital systems.

Attendees will also participate in a hands-on, interactive exercise designed by Dr. Kanakis, “Code Red: The Blood Shortage Simulation Game.” This short, team-based activity will walk participants through a mock shortage scenario, testing their decision-making around allocation, communication, and contingency planning while reinforcing core patient blood management (PBM) principles.

The goal is to make blood shortage preparedness approachable, team-oriented, and fun!!! helping participants leave with practical ideas they can adapt for their own institutions.

This session offers 1.0 CME/CMLE credit.
