With increased emphasis on cancer biomarker testing and precision medicine, workflows that optimize the biomarker testing process are of utmost importance. Current complex and fragmented workflows often lead to inefficiencies in tumor specimen collection, test selection, ordering and resulting. Recognizing that the landscape of cancer biomarker testing is rapidly evolving both in complexity and volume, ASCP conducted a project to explore the feasibility of a new laboratory role called the Cancer Biomarker Testing Navigator (BTN). ASCP formed a multidisciplinary project team and identified key areas where a BTN may reduce errors, streamline processes, and make significant contributions to improve cancer biomarker testing processes. The project utilized a mixed methods approach featuring an online survey and focus groups, concluding with a feasibility pilot at two hospital-based laboratories. This session will describe the proposed role of the BTN, provide an overview of key project findings, and discuss the next steps forward as ASCP continues to explore this conceptual role further. Participants will meet members of the multidisciplinary team and the project pilot sites, who will provide examples of how these challenges have been addressed in their experience/institutions and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions and brainstorm solutions to apply in their laboratories.
