Race and associated racial categories are social constructs. Assumptions about patients’ biological characteristics and socioeconomic status based on race can introduce and/or reinforce racial bias in clinical practice leading to systemic differences in care and poorer patient outcomes. This education session will focus discussion on the theoretical underpinnings of the social construction of race and associated social determinants of health with context of the impact of race-based diagnostic decision making in laboratory medicine and clinical practice.Faculty/Authors
