DMT151-24 - CME/CMLE - Videomicroscopy Tutorial (VMT): Enhancing Cytopathologists’ Roles in Patient Care: Molecular-Genetic Correlation
Course Description
Cytomorphologic determination of certainty (i.e. atypical vs. suspicious vs. malignant) and diagnostic specificity can be challenging. Absolute certainty and specificity have traditionally been the purview of histopathologists, and cytologic-histologic correlation has served as a diagnostic “gold standard." In response to increasing availability of molecular testing, this paradigm has begun to shift. Molecular diagnostics may provide prognostic, predictive, or diagnostic information (or a combination thereof), and they have, in some cases, even changed the diagnostic criteria for some entities for which morphology alone had been sufficient in the past. Furthermore, the knowledge base in molecular pathology is increasing rapidly. In this case-based education session, the faculty will reexamine those situations in which molecular testing is and is not valuable and, more specifically, delineate how the expanding landscape of molecular cytopathology will provide diagnostic and/or predictive information that is either not possible or not advisable to provide by cytomorphology alone.
