Course Description

This CMLE-bearing activity is designed for new clinical laboratory team members or others supporting the implementation of laboratory services (with limited clinical laboratory experience). It aims to provide foundational principles and practices of operating laboratory equipment within clinical laboratories. Best practices identified in this course should be further supplemented by institutional guidelines and standard operating procedures.   

The activity offers 1.0 CMLE credit.

Instructions

To claim CME/CMLE credit for the exercise, do the following:

  2. Click Go to Content and click the first module of the course.
  3. Complete the Demographic Survey.
  4. Complete the Pre-Test.
  5. Review the Educational Activity.
  6. Complete and submit the Post Exam. You will have a maximum of three attempts to obtain the required score. You will be notified if you have met the credit requirements after each attempt.
  7. Submit the course Evaluation.
  8. Enter the maximum number of credits offered and click Claim CMLE to register credit.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate types of pipets commonly used in the laboratory 
  • Identify the volume capacity for micropipettes and serologic pipets 

  • Differentiate TC to TD volumetric tools in the laboratory. 

  • Evaluate the advantages and uses of micropipettes and serologic pipettes. 

  • Discuss the purpose of common laboratory balances. 

  • Order proper operations for weighing items on balances. 

  • Identify the parts of the microscope and where they lie in relation to each other 

  • Calculate total magnification. 

  • Compare the magnification strength and applications of low-power, high-power and oil immersion lens. 

  • Arrange the required steps in focusing the microscope to examine a slide specimen. 

  • Identify resources to guide maintenance and calibration procedures for their laboratory
