The field of clinical microbiology is rapidly changing, and there are numerous new diagnostic tests available or soon to be available. With limited resources, laboratories must decide if it is worthwhile to adopt any of these new tests, but the array of options can be confusing. Each test has its own advantages and disadvantages that must be considered, and there is no single best test for all institutions. This education session will provide an overview of emerging diagnostics in clinical microbiology, focusing on the developments in: molecular testing, phenotypic susceptibilty testing, host response testing, and application of artificial intelligence.
