LPR103-24 - CME/CMLE - Laboratory Professionals' Track - Microbiology: Selective and Cascade Reporting of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Results to Improve Patient Care
Course Description
Antibiotics have revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections. At the same time, the extensive misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of an antimicrobial resistance crisis, which is now a major threat to the health of humans, animals, and our environment. Optimizing the usage of antibiotics improves outcomes for individual patients while also protecting the availability of effective antimicrobials, a shared societal resource, for the common good; such optimization is the central aim of antimicrobial stewardship programs. While patient-facing clinicians consider multiple factors when choosing an antibiotic regimen for a patient, the antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results produced by the clinical laboratory are often highly influential in guiding treatment. As such, the AST result report is a powerful tool in the antimicrobial stewardship toolbox. This session will illustrate how the incorporation of selective and cascade reporting strategies into the AST result report can impact antimicrobial prescribing. Using challenging case examples, the session will emphasize the importance of ongoing partnership between clinical laboratorians and antimicrobial stewardship teams in designing and periodically updating AST test and report algorithms, customized to meet the needs of the patients they serve, amidst an evolving landscape of emerging resistance, new antimicrobial agents, and updated expert guidance for the treatment of bacterial infections.
