LPR107-25 - CME/CMLE - Evaluating the Use of Race Adjustments in Maternal Serum Screening
Course Description
Race and ethnicity are incorporated into multiple clinical algorithms and decision tools, including algorithms for maternal and fetal disease risk estimation using maternal serum biomarkers. Race and ethnicity are social categories that are poorly defined and fail to capture genetic variation but may function as proxies for the complex interplay of genetic and social determinants of health. Using race and ethnicity to categorize human beings into different biological categories is not appropriate; however, colorblind or Eurocentric approaches to laboratory medicine practice can lead to disparities in care. How race and ethnicity should be incorporated into clinical algorithms and decision tools is therefore nuanced. This course will review the benefits and drawbacks associated with the use of race in maternal and fetal disease risk estimation from clinical and ethical perspectives.

This session offers 1.0 CME/CMLE credit.
