LPR109-25 - CME/CMLE - Updates in Cellular Therapies from a Laboratorians’ Perspective
Course Description
The newly approved Gene Therapies for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) now offers patients an option for a transformative treatment. Generating a gene therapy product requires collecting sufficient CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells from patients and is essential for the successful manufacture of gene therapy products at a therapeutic dose. Patients require up to 50 units of red cells in preparation for collection and to support the transplantation of the gene therapy product. This places a high demand on the blood bank as well as on blood donor services. In this session we will review the workflow surrounding commercial gene therapy for SCD and examine how blood transfusion is used to support stem cell collection and transplant. We will describe the challenges to the blood bank and describe tools, procedures and novel workflows to support gene therapy for SCD. Patients that enter the gene therapy journey are followed by many teams including Hematology, Stem Cell Transplant and Transfusion Medicine. We will review how to communicate blood bank results and blood supply and how to plan for the increased demand for specialized blood products for SCD patients.

This session offers 1.0 CME/CMLE credit.
