Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • describe infective endocarditis and list the most common causative organisms;  

  • identify Eikenella corrodens using colony morphology and biochemical testing results; 

  • explain how MALDI-TOF (matrix-assisted laser/desorption time-of-flight) works; 

  • defend the use of MALDI-TOF for challenging microbial identifications; and 

  • interpret a microbial identification scenario to determine whether the use of MALDI-TOF is appropriate.
