Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • describe the expected patient response to platelet transfusion; 

  • describe the laboratory presentation that may indicate that a patient is experiencing platelet refractoriness; 

  • explain the reasons a patient may not be responding to platelet transfusion as expected; and 

  • identify avenues for investigating platelet refractoriness, including advantages and disadvantages of each.
