Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • discuss a case of a strongly positive Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT);  

  • identify challenges of KBT interpretation and implications of dosage and administration of Rho(D) immune globulin (RhIg) based on KBT results; 

  • identify consequences of Rh isoimmunization and the importance of antepartum RhIg;  

  • calculate proper dosages of RhIg to administer postpartum; 

  • introduce use of the erythrocyte rosette screening test, confirmatory KBT, and flow cytometry studies to identify and quantify fetomaternal hemorrhage; 

  • identify causes of false-positive and false-negative results and concepts of underestimation and overestimation when using the KBT; and 

  • suggest strategies for medically treating a patient with a high KBT value.
