Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to
  • describe the KEL blood group system and  its importance in transfusion medicine; 

  • recognize the population frequency and clinical importance of the Kpb antigen in the KEL blood group system with attention to the challenges that come with transfusion; 

  • distinguish antibodies to high-prevalence antigens and assess the challenges in identification; and 

  • demonstrate the role of dithiothreitol (DTT)-treated red cells in antibody identification and evaluate the clinical and operational impact this method has on laboratories.
