Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • describe the role of Perls iron stain in detecting and characterizing hepatic iron distribution; 

  • explain the diagnostic utility of periodic acid–Schiff with diastase (PAS-D) in evaluating α1-antitrypsin deficiency; 

  • outline the application of the trichrome stain in fibrosis staging; 

  • integrate special stain findings with clinical/laboratory data to resolve a diagnostic challenge; and 

  • recognize that, while H&E remains essential, special stains can provide critical details not otherwise discernible.
