Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • recognize the importance of accurate bone specimen processing in staging oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), particularly for the assessment of medullary bone invasion; 

  • identify specific technical challenges that compromise diagnostic accuracy, including bone fragmentation, difficulties in visualizing the cortico-medullary junction, and processing artifacts that lead to interobserver variability; 

  • understand the anatomical variations of mandibular bone structure and how these anatomical features influence specimen handling and sectioning strategies; and 

  • apply best practices for bone specimen processing including appropriate decalcification and sectioning approaches to minimize artifacts and ensure diagnostic accuracy.
