Course Objectives

Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:

discuss challenges in performing phlebotomy procedures on patients who have received kidney transplants;

identify proper specimen collection when drawing blood from a venous catheter or an arteriovenous fistula;

describe posttransplant anemia;

discuss how laboratory tests can be affected by hemolysis or sample dilution during phlebotomy;

explain, in order, which sites are best for blood draws; and

identify draw sites that require physician approval for use.
