Course Objectives
Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • describe the differences between common coagulants (citrate, EDTA, and heparin) used in blood specimen collection tubes; 

  • summarize the clinical and physiologic reasons why venipuncture directly into specimen tubes, pre-filled with anticoagulant may or may not be preferred over other collection systems; 

  • explain best-practice for coagulation specimen handling and stability; and 

  • discuss the common pre-analytic causes of erroneous test results.
