The United States is a historic and current world leader in incarceration, with an estimated 2.3 million people confined annually and 1.9 million people in confinement on a given day. Many States have higher incarceration rates than other countries. Despite being the only population guaranteed healthcare in the Constitution of the United States, those incarcerated are lagging in or denied health screenings, surveillance, and treatment. Consequently, those currently and formerly incarcerated have a high rate of morbidity and mortality for most pathologies. Recently, deaths in custody have made national headlines but are largely limited to those occurring during altercations with law enforcement. This presentation will shed light on less commonly discussed issues that compromise the life expectancy of this vulnerable population by providing an overview of the complex nature of the carceral system in America, inclusive of the delivery of care, and health disparities between those currently, formerly, and never incarcerated.
