The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic created numerous challenges for our healthcare systems. Many, if not most, pathology departments were not adequately prepared for the impact of severe staffing shortages and supply chain interruptions on day to day operations. The pandemic may be over, but the next disaster is looming, whether it take the form of weather, infection, or some other catastrophe. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services require the development and maintenance of an emergency preparedness plan for healthcare facilities in anticipation of any type of disaster and for facilitating coordination with local, regional, state, and federal emergency preparedness teams. This session will review lessons learned about disaster preparedness from a transfusion medicine perspective but is applicable to any area of the laboratory.
