The clinical laboratory workforce in the U.S. supports a laboratory system that provides patients and medical providers with information essential for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of health and disease. Current ASCP Vacancy Survey data show continued increases in the numbers of laboratory vacancies and retirements as well as changes in certification requirements, with trends amplified during the pandemic continuing into the present. Qualitative analysis results showed that there is an urgent need to focus not only on recruitment but—equally important—on retention of laboratory professionals. This session will discuss these challenges and solutions underway to support the laboratory workforce via current research studies, published reports and coalition activities. Further, this session will discuss career enhancement through credentialing to support retention of laboratory professionals.
