WMPI1609 - CME/CMLE - Lab Middleware Interfaces
Course Description

This course primarily discusses the basics of interfaces as they relate to the laboratory information system. The way messages are formatted will be discussed and various ways data are represented in the medical interfaces will be distinguished. The course also explores point-of-care testing, laboratory-provider linkage functions, and using middleware relating to the lab information system and the laboratory instruments.

Following completion of this activity, you will be able to:
  • Articulate why interfaces are needed: Understanding the development and role of interfaces and; Describing how messages are formatted and data is represented in medical interfaces 

  • Differentiate between the four major ways in which interfaces function within the laboratory system. 

  • Illustrate the function of a provider portal (laboratory provider linkage) in supporting lab function. 

  • Describe how data is communicated with point of care testing devices. 

  • Highlight the communication of orders and results between the lab information system and laboratory instruments, both directly and utilizing middleware.
